Bhai Mardana Ji, a pivotal figure in Sikh history, is commemorated for his unwavering devotion to Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism. His death anniversary is a time for reflection and celebration among Sikhs, highlighting his contributions and the profound bond he shared with the Guru.
Bhai Mardana was born in 1459 in Rai Bhoi di Talwandi, now known as Nankana Sahib in Pakistan. He belonged to a Mirasi Muslim family and was the seventh child of Badra and Lakkho; his siblings had all died at birth.
Mardana's early life was marked by a passion for music, particularly as a rabab player, which he used to accompany Guru Nanak Dev Ji during spiritual journeys and kirtans (devotional singing). His connection with Guru Nanak Dev Ji began when he sought help from Guruji due to the premature deaths in his family. Guru Nanak Dev Ji reassured Mardana's mother that her son would not die young, leading to a lifelong bond between them. This relationship was not only one of companionship but also one of spiritual mentorship, with Mardana becoming one of the first disciples of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
