Punjab has emerged as a leader in environmental education and sustainability, clinching the prestigious title of Best State in the Centre for Science and Environment's Green Schools Program.
The state government in this regard has underlined that this recognition is a testament to the state's commitment to promoting eco-friendly practices within its educational institutions. The achievement highlights Punjab's proactive approach to integrating environmental awareness into school curricula and operations, setting a benchmark for other states in India.
The Green Schools Program is an initiative by the Centre for Science and Environment that aims to engage schools in environmental education through practical, hands-on activities.
The program encourages schools to conduct audits of their resource consumption across six key areas: water, air, energy, food, land, and waste. Schools are assessed based on their performance in these areas, with ratings ranging from green to red, reflecting their level of sustainability and environmental stewardship.
In the latest round of evaluations, Punjab stood out with an impressive participation rate. Out of approximately 7,200 schools that registered for the program, 4,734 schools submitted their green audit reports—the highest number recorded in the program's history. This remarkable participation resulted in 70 schools receiving the coveted 'green' certification, which signifies their exemplary environmental practices.
Schools participating in the Green School Program are evaluated based on the following criteria:
