Upendranath Brahma (1956 – 1990):

=> He was an Indian Bodo social activist and the former president of All Bodo Students' Union.

=> 8th president of All Bodo Students Union (ABSU).

=> Brahma was born in Kokrajhar district of Assam.

=> The title of Bodofa (Guardian of Bodos) was posthumously conferred upon Brahma.

=> His life is celebrated each year on the anniversary of his death, which is now called Bodofa Day(1st May May).

=> 31st March is birth anniversary of Bodofa.

=> CM of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma announced 31st March as Chatra Diwas(Students day).

• He was elected as the president of ABSU on May 31, 1986.
• He wanted to restore the glorious past of the Bodos.
• A historic 92-point charter of demands, which was placed by Brahma before the then Chief Minister of Assam Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and Governor Bhishma Narayan Singh at Raj Bhavan.

Key demands:

1. Immediate implementation of Bodo as an Associate Official Language in Kokrajhar district and Udalguri subdivision.

2. Establishment of a Central university at Kokrajhar

3. Inclusion of the Bodo Kacharis of Karbi Anglong and NC Hills Autonomous Districts in the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution

4. Introduction of the Bodo language as an optional subject in the exams conducted by the APSC/UPSC.

Note :-

• Bodoland Autonomous Council was created on March 31, 1993 as per a state law.
• It was given status of Autonomous council under VIth schedule in 2003.
• Bodofa was instrumental in securing autonomous council to Bodo region.
• Though he was not alive to witness it( he expired on 1st May 1990).
