Kiratpur Manali four-lane project

Why in news:

  • The construction of the Kiratpur Manali four-lane project marks a significant leap forward in road connectivity for the state of Himachal Pradesh, transforming the strategic highway and improving traffic flow.

Key Points:

  • Old national highway left abandoned with tunnels from Hanogi bridge to Thalaut: The old national highway via Hanogi temple faces neglect and abandonment. Severely damaged during last year’s flash floods, the stretch remains unrepaired, affecting daily commutes for residents of six panchayats.
  • The deplorable conditions have been ignored for long. Despite pleas from residents and temple devotees, the NHAI, PWD, and district administration have yet to address the deplorable conditions of the 6-kilometer stretch. Obstructed by boulders, slips, and silt, the road poses challenges for pedestrians and devotees alike.
  • Devotees of the Hanogi Mata Temple find it challenging to reach the sacred site due to the dilapidated road. Despite its importance, the neglected condition has discouraged many from making the pilgrimage.
  • The project has come up after a long wait and mounting frustration among panchayats. The residents of Batwada, Rainsh, Bata, Batwari, Bandi, and Jawalapur had expressed frustration over the lack of response from authorities despite repeated pleas for improving connectivity. The delay has negatively impacted the connecting roads to villages.
  • However, the project has had its share of criticism. Amidst the construction of the four-lane highway, locals have criticized the absence of provisions for local transportation stop facilities other and passenger facilities. Further, no alternate routes or link roads have been provided, leaving residents inconvenienced, especially in case of emergencies.
  • The concerned authorities of the National Highway authority of India have assured that the public concerns and issues will be incorporated into the project. In this regard, it has been pointed out that adequate steps will be taken to address concerns related to link roads and provisions for rural residents. There is a need for prompt action to restore connectivity and address the grievances of the affected communities.
  • Engaging with the public while building infrastructure is significant as it fosters a sense of ownership and understanding, leading to greater acceptance and support for the infrastructure project. Taking into consideration public needs can result in safer, more accessible infrastructure that accommodates diverse user groups and promotes inclusivity. Taking into account public input ensures that the infrastructure addresses real issues, leading to more effective and sustainable solutions. Incorporating public needs and concerns into infrastructure projects is therefore essential for creating successful, community-oriented solutions that benefit society as a whole.
