Why in news:

• The state government of Punjab has announced that it will make special efforts to promote the game of rugby and taking the first step in this direction, the sport will be included in the its flagship tournament, ‘Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan’, this year.

Key Points:

• A formal announcement in this regard was made by Sports Minister, Punjab during a meeting with Indian Rugby Football Union President Rahul Bose at his official residence.
• Rahul Bose is a well known actor and director and a former international rugby player. During the discussions, the state government of Punjab has also underlined that it is making continuous efforts to revive the sports culture in Punjab.
• It is noteworthy that the first ever ‘Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan’ were organised in 2022 and over three lakh sportsmen participated in 30 sports events. This time, rugby will also be included in the tournament that will be a coming together of best sporting talent from across the state.
• On specific reasons behind choosing rugby, the officials have pointed out that rugby is a combination of athletics, kabaddi, football and handball, and it is a sport which Punjabis would like. The authorities will now focus on creating awareness about the sport across the state. In addition to that, on the state government’s request, the Indian Rugby Football Union has also announced that an invitational Rugby Seven tournament would be held in the state soon.
