Why In News?

• Dr. Rajeev Singh Raghuvanshi, a resident of Ramnagar of Dokti police station area of Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh, has been appointed as the new Drug Controller General of the country.

Key points:

=> Dr. Rajeev Singh Raghuvanshi will replace Dr. VG Somani.

=> His term ended on February 15. Significantly, there are more than 250 patent medicines in the name of Dr. Rajeev Singh Raghuvanshi.

=> Dr. Rajeev Singh Raghuvanshi was working on the post of Secretary-cum-Scientist of Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission.

=> The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) had recommended his name for the post of DCGI last month.

=> Taking cognizance of this, the cabinet committee has passed the order.

=> The DCGI is the head post of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), which is responsible for ensuring the supply of quality medicines across the country.

=> It also has the authority to approve new drugs and regulate clinical trials.
