The state transport and road safety department of Rajasthan has issued an order to implement the vehicle scrappage policy.
The policy is geared primarily towards taking unfit vehicles off the roads.
As per the new rules, vehicle owners will be able to use a commercial vehicle for 15 years and a private car for 20 years, after which the vehicle will have to undergo a mandatory check at the automatic fitness centre.
If it is not found fit, it would be given for scrap.
According to the concerned officials, the directions are mainly for NCR districts and smart cities of the state, where air quality has been deteriorating.
According to the transport department’s records, over 1,75,368 diesel vehicles have been phased out in the NCR districts of Alwar and Bharatpur since 2018.
As many as 2,56,232 petrol vehicles have been phased out in these areas since then.
If an unfit vehicle is not given for scrap, its possession and plying will be considered illegal, and RC or other permits will not be issued.
