The Directorate of Secondary Education, Rajasthan has issued an order to convert 432 government schools in the state into English medium schools.
The order is in compliance of the 2022-23 budget announcement of Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot of opening 1,000 English medium schools in rural and urban areas each.
In the initial phase, the 432 state government schools are being converted to Mahatma Gandhi English Medium Schools. According to the order, these schools will be converted to English medium from the 2022-23 academic session.
As per the order, English medium education will be implemented only from class 1 to 5 in the current academic session, and the medium of education will be changed year-wise from class 6 to 8 from the next academic session onwards.
As per the state government's directions, the third language being taught in the schools will remain the same even after the medium of education is changed to English.
In the light of the fact that English is an international language and early access to it opens vast avenues for the students especially those belonging to the unprivileged sections of society, this is a welcome decision by the state government.
