The appointment of a new Chief Justice by the Central Government has been approved within a month of the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramanna. Article 217 of the Constitution states that the appointment of a High Court Judge shall be made by the President in consultation with the Chief Justice of India (CJI) and the Governor of the State concerned. In the case of appointment of a judge other than the Chief Justice, the Chief Justice of the High Court is consulted.
