What is the news?

=> A national survey has found the highest prevalence of alcohol and tobacco consumption among the population of North East India, said a press release issued by the city-based Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI).

=> As per the survey North East India showed a significantly higher prevalence of current tobacco use in any form (45.7 per cent), daily use of smoked tobacco (15.5 percent).

=> In India, the prevalence of alcohol use among both men and women was found to be highest in the Northeast region (22.3 percent), and the national average was around 12 percent.

=> Because of high consumption of alcohol and tobacco NE is turning into Cancer.

Cancer capital of India:

=> According to a report released by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Arunachal Pradesh Papum Pare district and Aizawl in Mizoram recorded the highest incidence of new cancer cases in the country among females and males respectively.

=> Papum Pare district has 219.8 per one lakh cancer cases among females,Aizawl has 269.4 per one lakh cases among males.

=> Overall Northeast has highest cancer cases.

=> The estimated number of cancer cases in the North East in 2020 was 50,317, among whom 27,503 were males and 22,814 females. Oesophagus cancer was most prevalent in the region with cases 5,785 last year.

=> Northeast is turning as cancer capital of India.

Problem with cancer patients of Northeast:

1. B Borooah cancer Institute of Guwahati is the only cancer speciality institute in entire Northeast.

2. Lack of awareness amongst the people about Cancer symptoms and wrong diagnosis leads delay in proper treatment.

3. This causes high mortality rate in cancer cases in Northeast, since cancer can be cured if detected in early stage.
