Rajasthan state’s initiatives for tobacco control have received praise from the World Health Organisation (WHO).
The WHO has said that the impact of strong anti-tobacco policies adopted by the state government was visible from the Global Adult Tobacco Survey results, which observed that the number of tobacco users in Rajasthan decreased from 13. 5 million in 2009-10 to 12. 6 million to 2016-17.
The World Health Organization has pointed out that the campaign has the potential to serve as a global template for stakeholders and community engagement.
The state government organized a major campaign on World No Tobacco Day (May 31) in which over 1 crore people had pledged for not to consume tobacco in the state under Nirogi Rajasthan initiative.
It also marked the end of 100-day campaign on tobacco control.
During the 100-day campaign, the health department organised event and engaging children, gram sabhas, women volunteers, departments of the government to spread the strong message that tobacco “kills” encouraging people to stop consuming tobacco products.
The government’s innovatively designed 100-day campaign has been meticulously planned to synchronize activities across 33 districts, right up to the level of village panchayats, with active involvement of panchayati raj institutions and the community, to take tobacco control to the household level.
