=> The Assam Government has Issued a preliminary notification for declaring the Behali Reserve Forest (RF) as a wildlife sanctuary.
=> Declared in 1917, the Behali Reserve Forest (BRF) has been the last remaining semi-evergreen forest in Biswanath district of Assam.
=> It was a home to around 950 species.
=> Area- 157.25 sq km.
Same place can be upgraded:
=> In 1908, Kaziranga was designated a "Reserve Forest"
=> In 1916, it was redesignated the "Kaziranga Game Sanctuary" ( allowed hunting for game)
=> In 1938 it was declared reserved forest under Indian Forest Act 1927( hunting banned).
=> In 1950 it was made a Wildlife sanctuary.
=> In 1974( 11th February) it was made National Park.
=> In 1985 it was identified as UNESCO natural heritage site.
Importance of forests:
There is no doubt about importance of forest for survival of mankind.
1. Most importantly they are source of oxygen.
2. They are suppliers of raw materials for industries, fodder, fuel, fertiliser fibre.
3. They prevent soil erosion, keeps the level of groundwater high.
4. Preserves high biodiversity.
=> So the government has made different laws to protect forests.
=> There have been some international initiatives to protect biodiversity.
