Explanation:

The biennial population census of the unique Kashmiri royal stag, locally known as the Hangul, has shown a marginal increase in its population.

But the census has indicated a skewed male-female and fawn-female ratio.

Lately, there have been a few sightings in connected areas outside the park in south Kashmir but their number is believed to be negligible.

The species has been placed in the ‘critically endangered’ category by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

It is a Schedule I Species in Indian Wildlife Protection Act 1972. It is the only survivor of the red deer group in the Indian sub-continent.

A population census is conducted every two years.
