On behalf of the President of India, Deputy Commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma  handed over the prestigious Padma Shri to “Gurmat Sangeet” legend Prof Kartar Singh.

Key Points:

Prof Kartar Singh was awarded Padma Shri for his immense contribution to the field of art. Owing to his health issues, he could not attend the function. Due to which, the Deputy Commissioner specially handed over the Padma Shri to Prof Kartar Singh.

What are Padma series awards:

?The Padma Awards are announced annually on the Republic Day (26th January).Instituted in 1954, it is one of the highest civilian honours of India.The Award seeks to recognize achievements in all fields of activities or disciplines where an element of public service is involved.

The Awards are given in three categories:

Padma Shri (distinguished service).

Padma Bhushan (distinguished service of higher-order) and

Padma Vibhushan (for exceptional and distinguished service),

Padma Vibhushan is highest in the hierarchy of Padma Awards followed by Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.
