The theme for this year’s International Mountain Day has been “Sustainable Mountain Tourism” as Sustainable mountain tourism contributes to create additional and alternative livelihood options and helps in poverty alleviation and social inclusion.
The International Mountain Day aims to encourage conservation and sustainable development of mountains, is celebrated on December 11.
The conservation of mountains is a key factor for sustainable development.
It is also part of Goal 15 of the Sustainable Development Goals set up by the United National General Assembly in 2015.
Acknowledging the importance of mountains, the UN had first declared the whole of 2002 as the UN International Year of Mountains.
