Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme:

=> The scheme was recently approved by the Union Cabinet.

=> It seeks to improve the operational efficiencies and financial sustainability of all DISCOMs/Power Departments excluding Private Sector DISCOMs.

=> The assistance will be based on meeting pre-qualifying criteria as well as upon the achievement of basic minimum benchmarks by the DISCOM.

Current news:

=> As part of the Centre’s ‘Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme’, Assam plans to lay over 5,000 km of high tension lines and install 60 lakh smart meters.

Smart Meter:

=> Electronic device that records information such as consumption of electric energy, voltage levels, current, and power factor. Smart meters communicate the information to the consumer for greater clarity of consumption behavior

=> The Smart Meter National Programme is being implemented to deploy smart meters across the country.

=> The scheme is being implemented by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL).
