Monsoon has ended on a deficient note for the Northeastern states and dry weather conditions are being expected over the entire North-eastern states.
According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), an agency under Ministry of Earth Sciences of the Government of India which is responsible for meteorological observations, weather forecasting and seismology, Southwest monsoon season has ended with 9% deficit rainfall.
The IMD has termed it as ‘below normal’ rainfall. This is the second consecutive year when the monsoon was deficient. The southwest monsoon brings rain from June to September.
The northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura received scanty rainfall, the IMD said. Three of them – Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya – received deficit rain every week of the monsoon season from June to September. Of all these Northeastern states Meghalaya experienced a drastic reduction in rainfall between June-September.
As per the IMD report, the top rain deficient states this year, besides Meghalaya (42 per cent), are Manipur (59 per cent), Arunachal Pradesh (32 per cent), Gujarat and Jharkhand (28 per cent each), Bihar (25 per cent), Tripura (21 per cent) and West Bengal (20 per cent).
One of the main reasons attributed for the deficit is the weather system over the Bay of Bengal which moved towards central or northern India instead of moving towards the eastern parts, leaving most of the eastern region and the North-East with insufficient rainfall.
The department also predicted that the northeast monsoon season, which occurs from October to December, over the southern peninsula is likely to see normal rainfall as a whole.
There is a tendency for some southern states, especially Tamil Nadu, to receive above normal rainfall this year, an IMD source said.
A Skymetweather prediction said that rain intensity will although, be subdued and temperatures may rise marginally over entire Northeast India.
