Why in news:

• Recently, Jammu Municipal Corporation's material recovery facility at Bandurakh was inaugurated by the Jammu administration.
• It is a major step aimed at better Solid Waste Management processes and environmental sustainability in Jammu and Kashmir.
• This step will also facilitate easy segregation, disposal and processing of waste generated in Jammu.

Key Points:

• The new facility has been equipped with the latest-technology based machinery for better efficiency to achieve 100 percent recovery from the dry waste.
•  It will ease the collection and segregation of all kinds of paper waste, cardboard and plastic etc. from day to day waste generated in the city.
• The new facility will complement the government's efforts for effective Solid Waste Management and will contribute towards the Swachh Bharat Mission of Jammu and Kashmir.
  
  
   

A step towards Sustainable Development:

• This is a part of the government’s focused attention towards Waste Management for a sustainable urban future in the Union Territory.
• Recently, the government has been putting in consistent efforts into the formulation of creative Waste Management Strategies for environmental sustainability, besides making the protection and preservation of the environment an integral part of the development plan.
• The key component of the project is the adoption of 3Rs approach- "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" that is primarily aimed at minimising the waste in a scientific manner so that the cities become more sustainable and clean.
• As far as the resource generation potential of the project is concerned, the facility will maximize the quantity of recyclables to be processed, while segregating materials that will generate the highest possible revenues from the recycling market.
• The facility has been equipped with various features to make it an economically sustainable socio-technical model that will serve as a benchmark for future projects to emulate.
• Moreover, it will also act as a support system for the capacity building of the waste pickers, waste aggregators, and associated recyclers.

Swachh Bharat Mission

• Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM), Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, or Clean India Mission is a country-wide campaign initiated by the Government of India in 2014 to eliminate open defecation and improve solid waste management.
• It is a restructured version of the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan launched in 2009 that was unable to achieve its intended targets.
•  Phase 1 of the Swachh Bharat mission lasted till October 2019.
• Phase 2 will be implemented between 2020–21 and 2024-25.
   
• The mission aimed to achieve an "open-defecation free" (ODF) India by 2 October 2019, the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi.
• The objectives of the first phase of the mission also included eradication of manual scavenging, generating awareness and bringing about a behavior change regarding sanitation practices, and augmentation of capacity at the local level.
• The second phase of the mission aims to sustain the open defecation free status and improve the management of solid and liquid waste.
• The mission is aimed at progressing towards targets of  Sustainable Development Goals  established by the United Nations in 2015.
   
• The mission is split into two components: Rural and Urban.
  • In rural areas Swachh Bharat Mission- Gramin is financed and monitored through the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation
  • Swachh Bharat Mission- Urban is overseen by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
     
• As part of the campaign, volunteers, known as Swachhagrahis, or "Ambassadors of cleanliness", promote indoor plumbing and community approaches to sanitation (CAS) at the village level.
• Other activities include national real-time monitoring and updates from non-governmental organizations.
