What is the news:
Despite the outbreak of Covid and decline in per hectare production, Sangrur district has again topped in wheat production in Punjab. Area farmers have demanded compensation for reduction in per hectare production, which is still highest across the state.
As per information, during 2019-20 FY, total 2,91,000 hectares of area was under wheat production and the district had contributed 16,78,197 MTs of wheat. During 2020-2021 FY, though the area under wheat remained the same, estimates of the Agriculture Department show the production will see a dip of 8.84 per cent and district authorities have estimated a production of 15,29,787 MTs of wheat.
“This year also, with 9.52 per cent contribution, Sangrur has topped in wheat production and per hectare yield in Punjab.
Wheat production in Punjab
Inspite of contributing only 1.53 percent in total geographical are of India, Punjab Plays vital role in ensuring food security in India. It contributes approximately 60% in central pool of rice and wheat. Due to its enormous contribution Punjab is also known as “Bread Basket” of country.
In the state, the production of the wheat has increased from 76 lakh metric tons in 1980-81 to 129 lakh metric tons in 2020-21.
