Usha Kiran Khan was born on 7 July 1945 in Lahariyasarai, Darbhanga (Bihar). He has been awarded 'Prabodh Sahitya Samman', the highest award of Maithili language and literature for the year 2020. He has also been honored with the prestigious Bharat-Bharati Award of Uttar Pradesh. He has also received the Sahitya Akademi Award for writing Maithili. Apart from this, he has also been awarded Hindi Savi Samman (Official Language Department, Government of Bihar), Mahadevi Verma Samman (Bihar Official Language Department), Dinkar National Award, Sahitya Academy Award, Kusumanjali Award, Vidya Niwas Mishra Award.
