The Mohali administration has set up its first solid waste management project at Jheurheri village in the district. The Mohali district administration, Kharar block development and panchayat officer (BDPO) and the Jhuerheri gram panchayat collectively came up with first of its kind project in the village.
Under this project, every household will be given a pair of green and blue trash cans to segregate garbage, which will be collected every day from each household in the village. The garbage will be segregated as dry and wet waste at the project site. The wet waste will be dumped into pits, which will eventually over a period of time be organically converted into manure, which can be sold in the market, thus increasing the income of gram panchayat. The dry waste can be sold in the scrap market, which will also add to the panchayat's income. The initiative will also help the village become "Swachh".
