Jharkhand student ends life ‘over poor English’

Finding English a tought nut to crack during her degree education, a 19-year-old students from Jharkhand, who only knew Hindi, ended her life at hostel room. She was disappointed at being not able to perform well as the medium used for degree was English.
The deceased was identified as Safara Parveen, a first year student in B.Sc nutrition and dietetics. She ended her life by hanging from ceiling at the hostel room of her college in KK Nagar area.
She locked herself up in the room on the pretext of getting ready for examination and hung herself from the ceiling using a shawl.
She was found hanging dead after the college staff broke into the room on receiving an alert from roommates.On enquiry with roommates and classmates, police found that she was upset by her inability to study English which drove her into taking the extreme step.
The girl completed her school education in Hindi before joining B.Sc Nutrition and Dietetics this academic year. She had stayed in hostel on the college campus. Safara took two examinations in the first semester on November 8 and 11 and has been found dejected as she failed to perform well. She had spoken to the roommates about the issue before committing suicide.
“Going by the statement of the roommate, Safara excelled in her studies in her schooling. But lack of proficiency in English caused mental agony to her,”The girl has a poor economic background and obtained admission to the college with the help of a service organisation.
