Sikh Pilgrimage sites in Uttarakhand :
Dehradun has a lot of visitors from the Sikh community. The Sikh pilgrimage in Dehradun is a much awaited event for the devout Sikh community. Dehradun is regarded as the gateway to the majestic Himalayas. The beauty of the place has prompted many a religious leader to set up base in the region.
Gurudwara Shri Hemkund Sahib :
Hemkund Sahib (also spelled Hemkunt), formally known as Gurudwara Shri Hemkund Sahib Ji, is a Sikh place of worship and pilgrimage site in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, India. It is devoted to Guru Gobind Singh (1666–1708), the tenth Sikh Guru, and finds mention in Dasam Granth, a work dictated by Guruji himself. With its setting of a glacial lake surrounded by seven mountain peaks, each adorned by a Nishan Sahib on its cliff, it is according to the Survey of India located in the Himalayas at an elevation of 4,632 meters (15,197 feet). It is approached from Gobindghat on the Rishikesh-Badrinath highway. The main town near Gobindghat is Joshimath. The altitude of the lake above MSL (as measured using GPS app of my cellphone) was found to be 13659 feet.
Hemkund is a Sanskrit name derived from Hem ("Snow") and Kund ("bowl"). Dasam Granth says this is the place where Pandu Raja practiced Yoga. In addition, the Dasam Granth says God ordered Sikh Guru Gobind Singh to take bath while he was in deep meditation at the mount of Hemkunt.
Ram Rai Gurudwara :
Ram Rai Gurudwara, located in Dehradun, the capital city of Uttarakhand, attracts a large number of Sikh Pilgrims. Also referred to as the Ram Rai Durbar,
Ramraiyas, also referred to as Ram Raiyas, are an Indian sect that follow Baba Ram Rai, the excommunicated eldest son of Guru Har Rai (1630–61). Ram Rai was sent by his father as an emissary to the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in Delhi. Aurangzeb objected to a verse in the Sikh scripture (Asa ki Var) that stated, "the clay from a Musalman's grave is kneaded into potter's lump", considering it an insult to Islam. Baba Ram Rai explained that the text was miscopied and modified it, substituting "Musalman" with "Beiman" (faithless, evil) which Aurangzeb approved. The willingness to change a word led Guru Har Rai to bar his son from his presence, and name his younger son as his successor. Aurangzeb responded by granting Baba Ram Rai a jagir (land grant) in Garhwal region (Uttarakhand). The town later came to be known as Dehradun, after Dehra referring to Baba Ram Rai's shrine.
Nanakmatta Gurudwara :
Nanakmatta is a historical town named after the Sikh pilgrimage site, Gurdwara Nanak Mata Sahib, in the state of Uttarakhand in India. The town is associated with Guru Nanak Dev and Guru Hargobind. It is situated on the bank of Deoha stream, which has since been dammed into a reservoir named Nanak Sagar. The Gurudwara is located 15 kilometres west of Khatima Railway Station on road to Tanakpur. The holy shrine is near the town of Sitarganj. It is one of three Sikh Holy places in the state, with others being Gurdwara Hemkunt Sahib and Gurudwara Reetha Sahib.
It is also a Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly constituency within the Nainital-Udhamsingh Nagar.
Before 1937, the gurudwara was maintained by mahants. A small gurudwara was constructed by the local people. The land for the Gurudwara was donated by Nawab Mehndi Ali Khan. Karsewa began in 1975. The gurudwara building is magnificent and has marble all over. The complex consists of the main hall, the langar hall, the parikarama, the sarai, offices, etc. A second gurudwara, Gurudwara Patshahi Sixth, is also present here. The pipal tree under which Guru Nanak Dev sat can also be seen between the main building and Gurudwara Patshahi Chhevi.
Gurudwara Reetha Sahib :
urudwara Reetha Sahib is situated in district Champawat, Uttrakhand, India. It is 16 hours journey away from Chandigarh (581 km) approx. This gurudwara holds a very sacred place in Sikh Religion as Guru Nanak Dev Ji himself had visited this place with Bhai Mardana JI.
Religious Importance :
Gurdwara Meetha Reetha Sahib was constructed around year 1960 and is situated near the village Deyuri in Uttrakhand. Guru Nanak Dev Ji visited this place with Bhai Mardana Ji. There were Jogis sitting under the reetha (soapnut) trees. Guru Nanak Dev ji sat under a reetha tree and asked Bhai Mardana Ji to eat a reetha. Reethas are usually bitter in taste but the reetha which Guru Nanak Dev Ji plucked for Bhai Mardana Ji was sweet. Jogis were surprised by all this and later they come to know that on which side Guru Nanak Dev Ji was sitting all the reethas has become sweet. These trees are still there in the Gurudwara and the reethas are still said to be sweet in taste. This is the reason why this place is called Meetha Reetha Sahib. Even today the people who visits the Gurudwara gets sweet reethas (soapnuts) as prashad. Due to its religious background this place is considered as a holy place for Sikhs. The temple of Devnath is also located beside the Gurudwara. On Baisakhi purnima, Sikh fair is held in this Gurudwara as this place is very sacred.Gurudwara's first caretaker was Lala Baisakhi Ram from Haldwani.
Gurudwara Sri Thada Sahib :
Gurdwara Sri Thada Sahib is situated in Distt City Bageshwar. Sri guru Nanak Dev ji came here and stayed for some time. This place was ruled by hindu King. He used to kill people on the name of "bali" to please God for a Son. When Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji was there, Sangat prayed in front of guru sahib that King used to kill one person daily to please God. While guru sahib was sitting there, Army men came to capture one person. All people ran away and Army men arrested guru sahib and Bhai Mardana ji. When they were taken in front of King. guru sahib asked him why he was killing people. Impressed with guru sahib's personality he explained guru sahib whole story. guru sahib told him that if he was killing God's son then how can he expect to have Son. guru sahib told him to pray for 40 days at this place and he will be blessed with Son. King prayed here for 40 days, And after some time he was blessed with a Son. King and his family used to take care of this place. King also allotted 20 acres of Land on the name of Gurdwara sahib.
Gurdwara Shri Amar Das Ji Sahib :
Gurudwars Shri Amar Das Ji Sahib is situated Haridwar city in UttaraKhand. It is situated in Kankhal area of Haridwar City. For many years Shri Guru Amar Das Ji used to come to Haridwar to offer his prayed at Ganaga. It is a famous Sikh Gurudwars in Uttarakhand.
Guru Sahib used to stay here. Later Guru Sahib listened the hyms of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and became his follower. Guru Nanak Dev Ji's foolower Guru Amar Das Ji served Second Guru Shri Guru Angad Dev Ji for many years.
This state is not only famous for its awe-inspiring scenic locales but some of the most renowned spiritual places of the country. The destination is known to draw a large number of pilgrims who love the peace, tranquility and serenity of the place that brings them closer to the exalted divine power.
