Major folk deities of Kumaon :
Nanda Devi: Nanda Devi is a popular goddess of common people all over Uttarakhand i.e. Kumaon and Garhwal divisions and in other parts of the Himalayas. Evidence of worship of Nanda from ancient times is found in religious texts, Upanishads and Puranas. In the Rup Mandan Granth, Nanda Bhagwati-Parvati is described as one of the six Angabhuta goddesses of Gauri and also one of the Navadurga. On the other hand, among the Durga mentioned in Bhavishya Purana are Mahalakshmi, Nanda, Kshemkari, Shivduti, Mahatunda, Bhramari, Chandramandala, Revathi and Harsiddhi. Whereas the Nanda shrine mentioned in the Shivpuran is actually Koormachal. Nanda is worshiped in the entire Himalayas as Shakti. In many places, fairs are held in honor of Nanda. Every year, 'Kot ki Mai' near Garun-Baijnath on the occasion of Ashtami i.e. Nandashtami of Shukla Paksha of Bhadra month.
Golu Devta: Golu is the most popular justice deity of Kumaon. According to folklore, Golu's father King Jhalrai was childless even though he had seven queens. In the hope of getting a child, the king got Bhairava in his dream, Bhairava saw him and said, Rajan, when you do your eighth marriage, I will be born as your son from the womb of the same queen. Thus the king married the eighth marriage to Kalinka. But this created envy among seven queens regarding Kalinka. The three queens, while plotting a conspiracy with Ishaya, the queens threw into the river Kali, where he got caught in a fisherman's net named Bhana. The childless fisherman was very pleased with the boy found and took him home. Due to meeting at Ghori Ghat, he named the child Goria. When the boy grew up, he insisted on taking the horse from the fisherman. It was difficult for the poor fisherman to buy a horse, On the insistence of the child, he gave him a wooden horse. The child was very happy to find a horse. When the boy sat on the horse, that horse started running gallop. One day, riding on a horse of Kath, he reached a place called Dholi Dhumakot, where seven queens were filling the water from Rajghat. He said to the queens, first his horse will drink water, later you will fill water. Hearing this, queens started laughing and said, "Oh fool!" Somewhere the horse of the wood also drinks water. The boy said, When silbatta can be born from the womb of a woman, then why the horse of the wood cannot drink water. Seven queens got scared after hearing this. When the king came to know about this, he called the child and wanted to know the truth. The child narrated the story of the conspiracy hatched by the seven queens with his mother Kalinka. Then King Jhalrai asked the child for proof of his son. On this, the child Goria said that if I am the son of Mother Kalinka, then at over the king's seat. After this, he became the king and got justice by this very moment a stream of milk will come out of my mother's chest and go in my mouth, and it happened. The king embraced the child and handed justice.
Kaluva: The silbatta mentioned in the legend of the deity of Guel is said to be the son of Kaluva and King Halarai. It is said that they originated from Silbatta. They are also mentioned in Gaddevi's Jagar. Khichdi is cooked in Thana in his name. The chicken is sacrificed in his woship.
Haru : Haru is said to be the maternal uncle of the deity Gavel god. They are philanthropic deities. Happiness, wealth, wealth are the indicators. He was the eldest son of Kali Naga Devi. Later became the king of Champawat. He went to select the queen of Chilakalot, where he was imprisoned. Younger brother Sam and nephew Grewal freed him. Their temples are in places like Bhatkot.
Sam : The younger brother of Sam Haru, who was called Kalinara, was also the maternal uncle of the deity Grewal. Like Haru, he is the god of happiness and prosperity. Phags of Haru Sam are also sung. They are worshiped in the awareness of Gwel. There are temples in many places like Jhankar Sam and Naini Chaugarkha near Jageshwar.
Garh Devi: The superpower that dwells in the burying donors is the local form of the Goddess Kali Maa Durga. To fulfill the wish have to speak in the ears of the Goddess.
Sidhva-Vidhu: These were heroic and tantric. They are considered as the brothers of goddess Garh Devi.Protect against divine disasters.
Gangnath: Many folk deities of Kumaon also have connections with neighboring country Nepal. Gangnath was the son of Raja Bhavaichand, the prince of the Doti kingdom of Nepal (here people are called Dotiyal). With his birth, there was a prediction that he would become a monk. At the same time, he used to call by a beautiful girl named Bhana in dreams from childhood. Like some of Lord Buddha's childhood, he was not allowed to go out of the palace to save him from becoming a monk. Despite this he left home and get educated in the Nath Panth. Further, he was reunited with the daughter-in-law of Joshi, the King's Diwan (Minister), resident of Joshikola, Almora. At this, Joshua killed both Bhana and Gangnath. From the third day of his death, he created an uproar in Joshi Khola. After apologizing, Joshians started worshiping him.
Malinath: Malainath was the son of Doti’s Abhaling.There are temples of Malinath in places like Banga, Ascot, Devchula, Panchmai and Didihat, bordering Nepal.
Bholanath: Bholanath Chand was the elder son of the Chand dynasty king Udaychand.He was exiled and made king younger son Gyanchand. Once, Bholanath dressed as a monk and stayed in a puddle in Almora. Gyanchand got information. In the fear of going to the throne, he tricked Bholanath and killed him. Later he started to be worshiped.
Kal Bisht: Kal Bisht was the son of Keshav Kotudi residing in Kotuida Kot of Patia village near Almora. There were Rajputs. He used to graze cows in Binsar. He fell in love with the upper-class woman, so he was killed.He used to help people. There is a temple at Dana Golu near Binsar. He worshipped in Pali Pachchaon region.
Chaumu, Badhan, Nauldanu: They are the gods of animals. Chaumu is worshiped in the area of ??Reuni and Dwaras. On the 5th, 7th or 11th day of the new breed of cows and buffaloes, they are worshiped with new milk and other milk products. Only after offering them, the milk of animals is considered worthy of being offered to the gods. Nauldanu is believed to reside in the root of a milky tree.
Bhagling, Hunskar, Balchin, Kalchin, Churmal, Bajain: They are also deities from Nepal. Pithoragarh district is worshiped along the border areas of Dungra, Dangti, Tamakot and Johar in Doti. Balchin was the son of Hunskar. Kalchin was the son of Kalinga. Churmal was the son of Kalchin. Their temples are in Bajain Bhanar.
Narasimha: Narasimha is the local form of Narasimha of Lord Vishnu. Adi Vyadhi, the Jogi God who removes the crisis. They are mentioned in Jagars. They are pleased with the flowers. They are also mentioned in the Katyur dynasty story and in Jagar, especially in the coming of Katiyekpur i.e. Baijnath from Joshimath, the capital of Katyurs.
Bhumiya: In every village of Kumaon, there is a temple of Bhumiya as the village deity. After every harvest, the bhumiya deity is worshiped by making offerings from new grains.
Devi: In Kumaon, many places, especially on the peaks, temples called Durga, Bhagwati etc. are found. In these places people orgnaise feast time to time. Jiyarani, the historical Veerangana of the Katyuri dynasty, is also worshiped by the Jagars on every Makar Sankranti (Uttarayani) .
Kali, Hatkali: Kalika, the form of Goddess Durga, is a goddess who sacrifices. They have temples in Devidhura, Gangolihat and Kotgadi etc.
Aadi:It is said that their feet are at the back. The live in peaks. Goats, fairies, elephants and dogs etc. walk with them.
Masan, Khabis and Runia: These are the ghosts of the crematorium. Attack on weak people. They satisfied by sacrifice
