Tap A can fill an empty tank alone in 6 hours. Tap B alone can empty the same tank, when filled, in 8 hours. If they are opened in alternate hours starting with A, then in how much time will the tank be full for the first time?
44 hours
48 hours
41 hours
47 hours
Correct option:3
Given that
Tap A can fill an empty tank alone in 6 hours. Tap B alone can empty the same tank, when filled, in 8 hours.
LCM of 6 and 8 = 24 i.e total work So, efficiency of tap A = 4 units/hour fficiency of tap 8 = 24/8 = - 3 units/hour According to the question, In 2 hours the work completed = 4 - 3 = 1 unit In 40 hours the work completed = 20 units Now, in the next hour, A will do the work and complete it [20 + 4 = 24 units] So, total time = 40 + 1 = 41 hours :. The required answer is 41 hours.
