Tap A can fill an empty tank alone in 6 hours. Tap B alone can empty the same tank, when filled, in 8 hours. If they are opened in alternate hours starting with A, then in how much time will the tank be full for the first time?

Given that

Tap A can fill an empty tank alone in 6 hours.
Tap B alone can empty the same tank, when filled, in 8 hours.

LCM of 6 and 8 = 24 i.e total work
So, efficiency of tap A = 4 units/hour
fficiency of tap 8 = 24/8 = - 3 units/hour
According to the question, In 2 hours the work completed = 4 - 3 = 1 unit In 40 hours the work completed = 20 units
Now, in the next hour, A will do the work and complete it [20 + 4 = 24 units] So, total time = 40 + 1 = 41 hours :.
The required answer is 41 hours.
