The ratio of the incomes of X and Y is 2 : 3, and the ratio of their expenditures is 4 : 5. If X and Y save Rs5,000 and Rs17,500,

respectively, then what is the income (in Rs) of X?

- Let X's income = 2x, Y's income = 3x

- X's expenditure = 4y, Y's expenditure = 5y

- X's saving = 2x - 4y = 5,000

- Y's saving = 3x - 5y = 17,500

- Solving:

- 2x - 4y = 5,000 ...(1)

- 3x - 5y = 17,500 ...(2)

- Multiply (1) by 5: 10x - 20y = 25,000

- Multiply (2) by 4: 12x - 20y = 70,000

- Subtract: (12x - 20y) - (10x - 20y) = 70,000 - 25,000

- 2x = 45,000 ? x = 22,500

- X's income = 2x = 45,000

Option 4: 45,000 is correct.
