- Bhanu Athaiya is indeed the first Indian to win an Oscar. She received it for Best Costume Design for the film "Gandhi" in 1983.

- Satyajit Ray was awarded an Honorary Oscar in 1992 for his lifetime achievements in cinema. It was not a competitive Oscar.

- AR Rahman won two Oscars in 2009 for Best Original Score and Best Original Song for the movie "Slumdog Millionaire."

- Resul Pookutty also won an Oscar in 2009 for Best Sound Mixing for "Slumdog Millionaire."
