History - This annual event, initiated by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in 1982 and recognized by UNESCO in 1983, aims to raise awareness about the importance of preserving cultural and natural heritage.

Theme -The theme for this year's celebration was "Heritage under Threat from Disasters and Conflicts: Preparedness and Learning from 60 Years of ICOMOS Actions". This focus highlighted the increasing risks faced by heritage sites due to natural disasters, armed conflicts, and climate change, emphasizing the need for preparedness and resilience in safeguarding these treasures .

World Heritage Day in the Context of India

• In the context of India, World Heritage Day 2025 was marked by a series of events emphasizing the importance of preserving the country's diverse cultural and historical landmarks.
• Various institutions organized heritage walks, exhibitions, and workshops, raising awareness about the significance of India's 42 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. 
• The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has announced free entry at all ASI-protected monuments across the country on World Heritage Day.
