In a race of 1200 m, Ram can beat Shyam by 200 m or by 20 sec. What must be the speed of Ram?

- Ram beats Shyam by 200 m. So when Ram finishes 1200 m, Shyam covers 1000 m.

- Also, Ram beats Shyam by 20 seconds. That means Shyam takes 20 sec more than Ram to cover the full 1200 m.

- Suppose Ram's speed = R m/s. Time taken by Ram = 1200/R sec.

- Shyam covers 1000 m in this same time. So Shyam's speed = 1000/(1200/R) = (1000R)/1200 = (5R/6).

- Now, time difference for 1200 m = 20 sec:

Time by Ram = 1200/R

Time by Shyam = 1200/(5R/6) = (1200 × 6)/(5R) = 1440/R

- Time difference: (1440/R) - (1200/R) = 240/R = 20

? R = 12 m/s
