Uttarakhand's cabinet approves stringent land law

The Uttarakhand Cabinet has approved a new draft law prohibiting people from outside the state from purchasing agricultural and horticultural land in 11 out of 13 districts. The law will be presented during the ongoing budget session, ending on February 24.

  • The government emphasized that while the law aims to protect state resources, it will not create a hostile environment for industries or new investors.
  • The new provisions include mandatory affidavits for land purchases and limited authority for district magistrates to grant purchase permissions, revoking certain rules established in 2018.
  • Under the new law, only in Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar districts can non-residents purchase agricultural and horticultural land.
