In India, Islamic rulers Qutb-ud-din Aibak imposed jizya on non-Muslims first time which was called called kharaj-o-jizya. Jizya was abolished by the Mughal ruler Akbar in 16th century but was re-introduced by Aurangzeb in17th century.Jizyais a per capita yearly taxation historically levied in the form of financial charge on permanent non-Muslim subjects of a state governed by Islamic law in order to fund public expenditures of the state, in place of the Zakat and Khums that Muslims are obliged to pay.
