Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai has been appointed as the Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Strategy) on June 9, 2025, while continuing as Director General of Military Operations (DGMO). The new role positions him at the helm of strategic planning and intelligence within the Indian Army.

• Dual Role: Ghai will simultaneously serve as Deputy Chief (Strategy) and DGMO, overseeing critical branches including operations, intelligence, strategic planning, and information warfare. 
• Strategic Appointment: This newly created strategic vertical is one of the most crucial staff appointments in Army Headquarters. 
• Ceasefire Diplomacy: Ghai was directly contacted by Pakistan’s DGMO during Operation Sindoor ceasefire talks—highlighting his influential role in military diplomacy. 
• Decorated Career: Awarded the Uttam Yudh Seva Medal (UYSM) on June 4, 2025, for distinguished service. He also led critical counter-insurgency operations as former GOC of Chinar Corps. 
• Regional Engagements: Earlier in 2025, Ghai reviewed security preparedness in Manipur amid border tensions, reinforcing a "whole-of-government" approach.
