On June 29 each year, statistician P.C. Mahalanobis’s birthday, National Statistics Day is observed. This day is observed to promote statistics as a field of study and to highlight the contributions of Indian statisticians. 

• Also known as ‘father of Indian statistics,’ Professor Mahalanobis is renowned for developing the Mahalanobis distance, a statistical measure utilized to determine the disparity between a point and a distribution.
• In India, the first National Statistics Day was observed in 2007. Following that occasion, a declaration was delivered in the Indian Journal on 5 June 2007.
• Statistics Day has been celebrated with seminars, conferences, discussions, contests, and other events to highlight the significance of official statistics to national progress.
