On September 7,2015 the Bhandari community of Nargol and the surrounding villages of Umargam, which was designated as OBC in 2007, is ready to give up its quota if the caste-based reservation system is scrapped. In a memorandum addressed to Governor O P Kohli and copied to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Anandiben Patel, President Pranab Mukherjee and the OBC commission, community representatives wrote that “in view of the agitation going on in the state by certain communities demanding OBC quota. in the interest of the country, we are ready to give up our OBC quota, provided reservation on the basis of caste is removed.”
