India has advanced three positions to rank 130 out of 193 countries in the United Nations Development Programme's (UNDP) 2025 Human Development Index (HDI), as detailed in the report titled "A Matter of Choice: People and Possibilities in the Age of AI". This ascent reflects significant improvements in health, education, and income indicators.

Key Highlights:

• India's HDI score increased from 0.676 in 2022 to 0.685 in 2023, maintaining its status in the medium human development category and edging closer to the high development threshold of 0.700. 
• Life expectancy at birth rose to 72 years in 2023, the highest ever recorded for the country, up from 58.6 years in 1990. 
• Mean years of schooling increased to 6.9 in 2023 from 6.6 in the previous year, while expected years of schooling remained steady at nearly 13 years. 
• Gross National Income (GNI) per capita grew to $9,046.76 in 2023, a significant rise from $2,167.22 in 1990. 
• India's HDI value has increased by over 53% since 1990, growing faster than both the global and South Asian averages.
