Lok sabha continues for 5 years from the date on which it holds its first meeting after being constituted. The expiration of the period of five years operates as dissolution of the Lok Sabha. This period of 5 years may be extended by the Parliament for a period not exceeding one year at one time, during the period when proclamation of emergency made under Article 352 is in operation. However, it shall not exceed in any case beyond a period of six months from the date I of proclamation of emergency has ceased to operate. (Article 83(2))
