    Given , a =12 , l = -3 , n =4 , then  

    l = a + (n-1)d 

    -3 = 12 + (4-1)d 

    -3 = 12 + 3d 

    Or   d = -5 

    Thus , x = 12+ d  

    = 12-5 = 7 

     And y = 7 + d  

    = 7-5 = 2
