The Theosophical Society was officially formed in New York City, United States, on 17 November 1875 by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky,Colonel Henry Steel Olcott, William Quan Judge, and others. In December 1878, Blavatsky and Olcott travelled to Mumtoi, where they arrived in February 1879 and established the headquarters of the Society at Adyar near Madras. In 1888, Mrs.Annie Besant joined the Society in England. Her membership proved an asset of greatest value to the Society.
