The National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (ICAR-NBFGR) has reported that Fish sperm cryobanking technology is undergoing field level validation. It has shown a potential to improve fish seed quality. The Fish sperm cryobanking technology is in experimental stage currently. The establishment of the fish cryobanks for fish seed production will be finalised only after experimental attempts has been completed.

The cryobanks can bring a revolutionary change in the fisheries sector for enhancing the fish production and productivity. This would also be increasing prosperity among the fish farmers.
Technology used
Cryomilt technology has been developed by the NBFGR and NFDB which will be helpful in establishing the Fish Cryobanks.
ICAR-NBFGR
ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (ICAR-NBFGR) is working since 1983 under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. It does the research related to the conservation of fish germplasm resources in the country.
National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB)
NFDC was established in 2006. It is as an autonomous organization under the Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India. It works with an objective to enhance fish production and productivity in the country. It also coordinate with the fishery development in an integrated manner.
Other Initiatives to encourage fishery sector
1. Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampadan Yojana (PMMSY)
PMMSY has been launched with a vision to double the farmer’s income. This scheme addresses the gaps in fish production and productivity, technology, post-harvest infrastructure and management, quality, modernisation and strengthening of value chain and fishermen’s welfare.
2. National Fish Farmers Day
It is celebrated in remembrance of scientists Dr. K. H. Alikunhi and Dr. H.L. Chaudhury who demonstrated the technology of induced breeding (Hypophysation) in 1957. The event is celebrated on 10th July every year with an aims to draw attention to change the way the country manages fisheries resources in order to ensure sustainable stocks and healthy ecosystems.
