First Japanese monarch to abdicate in 200 years

The 125th Emporer of Japan, 85-year-old, Emporer Emeritus Akihito abdicated the throne after 30 years of ruling because of his declining health and age-related problems. His rule was known as Heisei.
Akihito is the first Japanese Emporer to abdicate since Kokaku in 1817.
He is succeeded by his son Emporer Naruhito. His rule will be known as Reiwa era.
