Indian Journalist P Sainath wins Japan’s Fukuoka Grand Prize for 2021
  • Renowned Indian journalist and founder of PARI (People’s Archive of Rural India), Palagummi Sainath  has been awarded the Fukuoka Grand Prize for 2021.
  • The award is given to individuals and organisations for their work in preserving Asian culture, by Japan’s Fukuoka city and the Fukuoka City International Foundation.
  • The Fukuoka Prize is given in three categories: Academic Prize, Culture Prize and the Grand Prize.
  • Among these the Grand Prize is considered the biggest one. The last Indian to be awarded the prize was A. R. Rahman (2016).
  • Academic Prize – Historian Romila Thapar
  • Culture Prize –  Sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan
