Mount Nyiragongo Erupts in Eastern DR Congo

• After the eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano, the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo launched an evacuation plan for the "Eastern City of Goma".
• Mount Nyiragongo is a volcano located 10 kilometres from Goma.
• Thousands of residents have been frightened as a result of the eruption. As a result, they are now fleeing to the east, towards Rwanda.
• Mount Nyiragongo is one of the dangerous and most active volcanoes in the world.
• It is located at an elevation of 3,470 metres in the Virunga Mountains, which are part of the Albertine Rift. Volcano is located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo's Virunga National Park.
• The main crater of the volcano is about two kilometres wide and contains a lava lake.
• Together, Nyiragongo and Nyamuragira are responsible for 40% of all historical volcanic eruptions in Africa.
