Recently, there has been a discussion over the gap between the requirements and availability of facilities in the mental healthcare sector in India. According to a recent National Mental Health survey, approximately 150 million people in India need care for their mental health condition. It further says that between 70 and 92 percent of these cases failed to receive treatment. The World Health Organisation says India has the highest number of teenage suicide rates globally. During the US President Donald Trump visit to India, the countries signed agreements in the field of energy, oil, defence and health. India and US signed the agreement on mental health to enable India to treat mental health issues. India accounts for 28% of global suicides but nearly half of the population is neither aware about mental health issues nor has access to a mental health facility within a 20km radius says an independent study conducted across seven north Indiam states.

In 1982, the government of India launched the National Mental Health Programme (NMHP) to improve the status of mental health in India.The program was launched keeping in view the heavy burden of mental illness in the community, and the absolute inadequacy of mental health care infrastructure in the country to deal with it. Rehabilitation
Prevention and promotion of positive mental health.
