Recently, the FSSAI has updated the food packaging norms. The new guidelines on food packaging under the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations, 2011, will come into force in July 2019. Recognising the importance of packaging in the food sector and its impact on food safety, packaging regulations have been separated from labelling regulations. The primary objective of packaging is to protect the food contents from micro-biological, chemical, physical and atmospheric contamination and preserve the food and thereby protect consumer’s health.Good packaging also ensures that there is no change in sensory properties or composition of food when packed. Packaging is essential and critical for promoting food safety, extended shelf-life and thereby enhancing food security. Earlier, a study was conducted by FSSAI in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Packaging, Mumbai and the National Test House, Kolkata. The test concluded that the food samples collected from the unorganised sector was contaminated by the packaging materials used. In its wake, the FSSAI has amended the existing provisions with respect to packaging.Hence it is mandatory to follow the new norms.
Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Shri JP Nadda has launched which project for the safety standards of food on the streets?
Safe Street Food
Clean Street Food
Hygienic Street Food
None of the above
healthy street food
This FSSAI project will raise the safety standards of foods sold on streets across the capital city of New Delhi by training 20,000 roadside vendors on aspects of health and hygiene, in the first phase. FSSAI will partner with Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship under the Recognition of Prior Learning under the PMKVY scheme for this project. Project Clean Street Food is one of the initiatives taken up by FSSAI under a 360 degree approach to Food Safety and Healthy Nutrition. This would involve training and capacity building of the street food vendors and ensure proper regulatory oversight over them under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
