Section 36 of the Evidence Act, mentions two kinds of maps or charts – (1) maps or charts generally offered for public sale and (2) maps or plans made under the authority of Government.

The admissibility of the first kind of maps rests upon the ground that they contain the result of enquiries made under competent authority concerning matters in which the public are interested. The admissibility of the second class rests on the ground that, being made and published under the authority of Government, they must be taken to have been made by, and to be the result of, the study or inquiries of competent persons.
