Consider the following:
1. The Earthen rotates 1° in 4 minutes.
2. Places east of Greenwich see the Sun earlier.
3. Prime Meridian keep changing with international agreements.
4. At 75° latitude the longitudes are wider.
How many of the following are correct ?
Only One
Only Two
Only Three
All Four
1. First statement is correct as the earth rotates 15 degrees every 60 minutes. So it rotates 1 degree in 4 minutes.
2. The earth rotates from west to east, so every 15° we go eastwards, local time is advanced by 1 hour. Conversely, if we go westwards, local time is retarded by 1 hour. We may thus conclude that places east of Greenwich see the sun earlier and gain time, whereas places west of Greenwich see the sun later and lose time.
3. Third statement is also correct as various countries from time to time adjust their longitudes for various reasons. For examples Samoa Islands switched their longitude to give boost to their trade.
4. Fourth statement is incorrect. Longitudes at higher latitudes are narrow.
