The distribution of annual rainfall over different parts of India shows the following trends:
1. The rainfall decreases as one moves from Kolkata towards Amritsar.
2. It shows a declining trend towards the interior plateau region from coastal areas.
3. North eastern parts receive more amount of rainfall as compared to north western parts.
4. Areas lying on windward side receive more rainfall than these lying on leeward side.
Choose the correct answer from the codes given below
1, 3 only
1,2,3 only
2,3 & 4 only
1,2,3,4
1. Calcutta has more rainfall than Amritsar because they lie in the lower Ganga plain/valley so when the S.W. Monsoon Bay of Bengal Branch comes up the lower Ganga Valley it sheds its moisture and gives more rain here and as we go further up the plains, the amount of rain lessens.
2. Rainfall also lessens towards the interior plateau region from coastal areas, as moisture availability is more for coastal areas than interior pleatau.
3. North eastern parts receive more amount of rainfall as compared to north western parts. This statement is also correct as amount of moisture availability is inversely proportional to distance. The more the distance from the source of moisture, there is lesser availability of moisture for rainfall.
4. Areas lying on windward side receive more rainfall than these lying on leeward side because by the time the air gets to the leeward side of the mountain it has already lost most of its moisture.
