Uttarakhand High Court has given legal entity status to the animal kingdom (including avian and aquatic creatures) in 2018.The entire animal kingdom, including avian and aquatic ones, are declared as legal entities having a distinct persona with corresponding rights, duties and liabilities of a living person.All the citizens throughout the State of Uttarakhand are hereby declared persons in loco parentis as the human face for the welfare/protection of animals, it added.
Though Ganga and Yamuna have also been given this status, it does not extend to all other rivers.
Temple deities and religious books have also been granted legal person status in earlier judgements.
