The reason behind heavy decline in the population of the vultures is diclofenac taken by vultures from the carcasses of dead cattles laying in open field. Declining vulture population can cause a health crisis India’s three vulture species saw an unprecedented decline of 97 to 99.9 percent between 1992 and 2007 owing to ingesting diclofenac through cattle carcasses. Diclofenac is a common anti-inflammatory drug administered to livestock and is used to treat the symptoms of inflammation, fevers and/or pain associated with disease or wounds. It was widely used in India beginning in the 1990s.
