Operation sunrise and Kaladan Project
  • India and Myanmar Armies carried out a three weeklong joint coordinated operation in their respective borders, targeting many militant groups operating in Manipur, Nagaland and Assam.
  • During 'Operation Sunrise 2' both armies coordinated with each other to bust camps of militant outfits and nabbed at least six dozen militants
  • Several camps of insurgent’s groups were also destroyed during the operation but Myanmar Army too suffered some losses in the second phase of 'Operation Sunrise 2'.

About Operation Sunrise:

  • Operation Sunrise was a joint operation carried out by both Indian and Myanmar armies. During the operation, at least 10 camps of an insurgent group in neighbouring Myanmar were attacked.
  • The Indian Army did not cross into the Myanmar side but there was a massive mobilisation along the border, on the Mizoram side.
  • Indian side supported Operation Sunrise by providing surveillance equipment and deploying additional troops on the Indian side.
  • The target of the Operation Sunrise was the Arakan Army, an insurgent group trained by the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) which is reportedly trained by China.
  • India had carried out a similar operation in 2017 which had inflicted heavy casualties on the insurgent National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K) group during the retaliatory fire along the India-Myanmar border.

About Kaladan Project:

  • It is a multi-modal transport project having three different stretches involving shipping, Inland Water and road transport stretches. This project is administered by Ministry of External Affairs
  • This project seeks to facilitate connectivity between the mainland India and the landlocked North Eastern States through maritime shipping, inland waterways and roads of Myanmar
  • The link between landlocked north eastern states and Myanmar will lead to enhanced trade and commerce across the border and enable cultural and social integration at the regional level.
  • This project will reduce distance from Kolkata to Mizoram by approximately 1000 km and cut travelling time to 3-4 days for transport of goods.
  • India entered into a framework agreement with Myanmar in April 2008, to facilitate the implementation of the project. On completion, the project will help connect Mizoram with the Sittwe Port in Rakhine State of Myanmar. On the Indian side, work is on to extend the Aizawl-Saiha National Highway by 90 km to the international border at Zorinpui.
